Her father inherited a fine house, a good chunk of money, and the family mortuary business upon the death of her grandfather, making them very comfortable -- and even more snobby. Henri met Beatrix when they were young, and when they married, they melded two of the most influential, richest families in the region. They showered gifts and affection on Melisande, their only child, making her quite possibly the most lucky kid in the city.
Her childhood was privileged but lonely. She had nannies, servants, and pets galore, but she never had any real friends (her friends became whomever she could buy), so she began to manipulate people into doing what she wanted them to do... and she got very good at it.
High school life was not as normal for her as it was for others; she was possibly the most hated yet most adored and admired person in the entire private school. However, her elevated status attracted many rivals and many fights. The schools barely tolerated her, and they only did so because of how much money her parents "donated." The entirety of the staff breathed a sigh of relief when Melisande finally graduated and moved on.
However, her parents still could not.
Melisande grew more and more out of control, and when she purposely wrecked the car after throwing a tantrum, her parents decided it was time to act. They checked her into a mental hospital at 17, but she was too much to handle. She was expelled only three months later -- after managing to stab a nurse in the jugular with a needle that had been meant for her.
Another hospital was found, and she was checked in yet again. This time she managed to escape thanks to a mysterious fire that caught half of the west wing ablaze. The electrical system was shot, and the ward had to be evacuated. The source of the fire was chalked up to a faulty electrical outlet, allowing Melisande to escape criminal charges.
Henri and Beatrix could take no more. They began to look elsewhere for treatment for Melisande's psychotic behavior.
They finally chose Cherry Hollow -- mostly on the basis that it was far, far away from Minnesota. And so Melisande was packed up and shipped off as a transfer patient.
She resides now in Cherry Hollow and is intent on making quite the name for herself.
